Every year, Gas Safety Week shines a spotlight on the importance of using gas safely at home and at work. This year, running from 8th – 14th September 2025, the campaign is coordinated by Gas Safe Register and supported by thousands of organisations across the UK – including CORGI Trade.
It’s a vital reminder that while gas is a reliable and efficient source of energy, it can also be dangerous if appliances are not properly installed, maintained, and serviced.
Why Gas Safety Matters
Unsafe gas appliances can cause gas leaks, fires, explosions, and carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning. Carbon monoxide is especially dangerous as it is colourless, odourless, and potentially deadly.
Every year, families and businesses are put at risk because of poorly maintained or illegally installed gas appliances. Gas Safety Week aims to raise awareness and give both installers and customers the tools they need to stay safe.
Key Messages for Gas Safety Week
Here are the core safety steps we’re encouraging everyone to follow:
- Always use a Gas Safe registered engineer
Only engineers on the official Gas Safe Register are legally qualified to work on gas. - Book an annual gas service
Boilers, cookers, and fires should be serviced once a year to keep them working safely and efficiently. - Check for warning signs
Yellow or lazy flames, increased condensation, or black marks around appliances may signal a problem. - Install a carbon monoxide alarm
An audible CO alarm provides an essential early warning if dangerous levels are detected. - Know the emergency procedure
If you smell gas or suspect a leak, call the National Gas Emergency Service immediately on 0800 111 999.
Why It Matters
Every year, families are put at risk by unsafe gas work – often carried out by unqualified individuals. Gas Safety Week is about raising awareness so you can make the right choices and stay safe.
By taking just a few simple steps, you’ll protect your household and have peace of mind that your gas appliances are working safely.
